about
Back in 2016, my wife and I were searching for a house to call our home. For about 8 weeks straight, we ventured out into the inflated Portland area market, looking for a spot that had a yard for flower and vegetable gardens, room for chickens and dogs, a studio space, an open kitchen where we could cook, and an address close to the school where we worked.
We put about 4 or 5 different offers on houses, and all of them were rejected. We had to leave her house that she just sold, and it looked like we just weren't going to find what we wanted.
Then, we added a listing on Catalina Lane to our Saturday itinerary, and we fell in love with it immediately. So much so that we went back home, and I wrote this song about the house. The next day, we went and looked at it again and put an offer in. Christina made me record a demo version of this track, and we submitted it along with our offer.
A couple days later, we got a call from our realtor saying that the current homeowners loved our story and our song, and that if we would match some of the stipulations of the other offer, they'd sell us the house.
The rest is history. We've been living here for about 3.5 years now, and it's been some of the best 3.5 years of my life. We've ripped up the kitchen, built chicken coops and garden fences, planted all kinds of fruits and veggies and flowers, fixed light fixtures and toilets, and dealt with all the other shit that comes along with owning a house.
The original plan was to make a whole album about this new phase of my life, but those songs all turned into Claud Six or BCxLD or Shut-ins or Jellyfish Brigade or Hives Squad or R4PC4MP tracks, and this lonely Lukulele Slim song (along with a few scattered others I'll release in 2020) never formed into a fully complete project.
However, this song is probably one of the most important I've ever written just because of how much it changed the trajectory of my life.
Much love,

lyrics
Lyrics:
Once I saw you, I knew that you were the one
To spend my years with until my years were all done
I've been around, and I ain't see one like you
We'll settle down and figure out what to do
Oh, Catalina
My heart is full
My head is in the dirt
I'll spend my money
I'll spend it all
I'll give you what you're worth
It ain't simple. It ain't easy for us
But it wouldn't be worth it if it was
We'll build a garden, raise a child or two
We'll make our ends meet, make a home out of you

Diving Lessons dropped the summer of 2014. It is my crowning achievement as an artist. My favorite project ever. Hip hop meets electronic music meets R&B meets folk. Lukulele Slim
